Regular inspections could really help to lessen forklift maintenance and save you copious amounts of money eventually. The standing joke in the industry is a forklift technician coining the saying "Pay me now, or pay me later," as it usually costs more to procrastinate when it comes to forklifts. For example, the minor fixes which go unrepaired could eventually turn into costly repairs.
Tilt Cylinders
Oil leaks are a really serious problem if they are not checked. Check for damage or oil leaks on a regular basis. Oil leakage can lead to uncontrolled mast movement and this could be extremely dangerous. Whether the leaks are in the cylinder or outside, the outcome could lead to cylinder drift and loss of vital fluid. When damage or leaks are detected, you normally would need to replace the seals or the whole cylinder assembly.
Chains
You don't want mast lift chains to stretch beyond acceptable limits, so pay attention and look carefully for any indications of damage or wear and tear. Regularly check a chain wear gauge so as to monitor the wear. If the chain is worn beyond 2% or rusted, you have to replace the chain. Following these guidelines would help keep your machine functioning optimally.
Mast
When operating the lift control lever, the mast has to be moved up and down smoothly, making sure to inspect if the mast is moving smoothly backwards and forwards. You might need to lubricate the mast strip sliding surfaces if the sliding surfaces are binding. Also lubricate their fittings, because there is a fitting located on either side of the inner mast. The lift bracket side rollers are one more lubrication spot.
Forks
The blades need to be checked for cracks, damage and wear because cracked or worn forks could fail with out any warnings. Of course, any damaged fork means immediately taking the truck out of service. If the cracks are deeper than just on the surface, they should be replaced because they truly can't be safely fixed.
