A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machinery that is quite like a forklift. It enables the driver to utilize forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some items, and this feature is something the forklift does not provide. Normally, order pickers are powered by electricity. These machines are mainly used in a warehouse environment. Usually they are used for moving pallets and doing certain jobs in the shelving and stocking department.
The order picker operator sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the machinery forward, backward or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the tines could be lifted up to the required level that makes it convenient for the operator. For example, if the required materials, are situated on a shelf which the operator could not reach, then whole platform is capable of being lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
When the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker can be driven to its next load. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, however, some companies might have procedures and policies in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker can also place pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers can be used to complete these specific jobs at some companies instead.
